Dance Nova Scotia is pleased to shine our community spotlight on Cape Breton dancer Isabella Forrest.

Tell us a little bit about you. What is your dance background, how did you get started, and how long have you been dancing?

I began dancing at the age of three at Northside Dance. Although I stepped away briefly, I returned to dance at five and have been training consistently ever since. During the pandemic period my perspective on dance deepened significantly, and it was then that I discovered a true passion for the art form and recognized it as the path I want to pursue long-term. Since that time, I have remained dedicated to continued growth, discipline, and artistic development as a dancer.

What styles of dance have you trained in?

I have and continue train in the genres of ballet, pointe, jazz, contemporary, lyrical, modern, tap, acro, musical theatre, and have briefly explored the world of ballroom.

What is your personal style of dance that you currently practice or perform?

My personal style is constantly evolving, and I really enjoy exploring and learning from a variety of dance genres.

What have you found most challenging in your dance journey?

The most challenging part of my dance journey has been constantly comparing myself to other artists. Striving to overcome this mental challenge has taught me that true growth comes from focusing on my own progress.

Is there a favorite or most memorable performance or production you’ve been part of?

I’m continuously grateful for the incredible opportunities I’ve had to perform. I’ve been part of many spectacular productions and performances, but two of my favourites include performing at the IDO World Dance Challenge with Team Canada Dance in Monterrey, Mexico and performing as part of the SOL Elite travel team in Benalmádena, Spain.

Have you had the opportunity to venture into choreography? If so tell us about that.

I’ve recently started exploring choreography, creating solo pieces for younger students. While it’s a new experience, it has been a rewarding challenge that has pushed me out of my comfort zone and has really encouraged growth as an artist this season.

What is your favorite thing about dancing?

What I love most about dance is that it isn’t easy. It requires discipline, passion, and physical resilience. It’s my way to express my feelings, and being in the studio is my happy place. Performing feels like a true reward, a testament to countless hours of hard work. Dance has taught me that with resilience and determination, dreams can come true, showcasing that the values and friendships I’ve learned extend far beyond the studio.

What is your least favorite thing about dancing?

I don’t have a least favourite aspect of dance. It is my life, and although it comes with its challenges, I wouldn’t trade it for anything,

Who has inspired you in the dance world? Who are your dance heroes?

While I am inspired by many influential choreographers and leaders in the industry, my true heroes and inspirations in dance are the people I am continuously surrounded by, my peers and teachers. Their passion, artistry, and dedication motivate me every day.

What is the dream stage you would want to perform on?

I have two ultimate dream stages to perform on: any Broadway theater and Radio City Musical Hall as a Rockette.

How do you ensure you stay strong and fit enough to perform? What are some of your wellness strategies?

I ensure I stay strong and fit to perform by consistently attending technique classes, cross-training, fueling my body with proper nutrition, and allowing myself adequate rest and recovery. These wellness strategies help me maintain the strength, stamina, and focus needed to succeed as a dancer.

What are some of your non-dance passions?

Outside of dance, I enjoy spending time with friends and family, as well as pursuing interests in modeling, acting, singing, and baking.

What’s coming up for you? Any new projects you’re working on?

I don’t have any new projects at the moment; I’m focusing on my training and preparing for the upcoming competition season with my amazing team.

What are your personal dance goals?

My goals for this season are to grow as a dancer by continually refining my skills, embracing new challenges, and being a dedicated, supportive member of my team.

What advice would you give to youth in dance?

My advice to a younger dancer would be to trust the process, stay consistent with your training, and remember that growth takes time. Celebrate your progress, don’t compare yourself to others, and always dance with passion and joy.
